Phalangeal Fractures

Phalangeal Fractures refer to a break in one of the phalanges—the small bones that comprise the fingers and thumb. Any direct trauma or twisting injuries—such as in football, basketball, soccer, or sailing—can result in broken phalanges that are indicated by pain, numbness, swelling or bruising. These injuries are common in martial arts, such as Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu, Judo, Yudo, Zen Do Kai, Hapkido, and Capoeira.

Simple fractures are normally treated by splinting, taping and therapy, although unstable or misaligned fractures may demand operative fixation using pins, screws and plates.
